As part of every hosting package and also within every MyAccount, Melbourne IT provides tools to manage the advanced configuration of your DNS entries. Before we have a look at some of the common ways in which this can be used, you should be aware that DNS can get very technical. But like any technical issue, it can be broken down into smaller components that can be more easily understood. Plus, if you get stuck, the technical team at Melbourne IT are happy to help.
This guide revolves around our primary DNS management tool. You will typically use this if you only have a domain name with Melbourne IT but are using a collection of service potentially spread over different providers. Please refer to this guide

What is DNS
DNS is an abbreviation for Domain Name System. DNS determines where email is delivered, what website is displayed and where web traffic is directed. It is through DNS that domain names are found on the Internet as DNS maps and translates IP addresses to a human readable domain name. Imagine if you had to type in an IP address every time you wanted to do a google search?
e.g. 188.8.131.52 translates to melbourneit.com.au.
How do I activate my DNS
Please note: Once you activate your DNS management, all services that currently exist with your domain name will be deactivated. This is due to the domain being redelegated to Melbourne IT's DNS hosting servers. If your DNS is already activate you can ignore this step.
To activate your DNS, please refer to the below instructions.
- Login to your MyAccount by clicking the Login link at the top right of the website and entering your username and password.
The MyAccount Console will be then appear
- Click Manage Domain Names under the Manage Domain Names section of the Console
The Manage Domain Names page will be displayed with the list of domain names under your MyAccount
Click the domain name you want to activate your DNS management for The Domain Management page for the selected domain name will be displayed
- To the left of the console under 'DNS' click Activate DNS
You will be prompted to confirm the activation. Once activated, propagation may take anywhere between 24-48 hours for DNS management to work
- This will delegate your Melbourne IT domain to Melbourne IT's nameservers.

How do I set an DNS Record record
The following steps assume that you have accessed your MyAccount and your DNS management product is active.
1. Under 'Manage Domain Names', select the domain name which you activated your DNS management for
2. To the left of the console under 'DNS' click Manage Power DNS
3. Scroll down to the section covering the type of DNS record you wish to add.
4. Enter in the host name eg. www.example.com
5. Enter in the IP address under the 'Points To'
6. Select the type of record you are setting up eg. A Record
7. Double check and see if what you typed is correct. Once satisfied, click Add, Wait until the status changes from Publishing to Published
Please note: If you want to your changes to be visible as soon as possible you will need to modify the TTL record. This tells name servers around the world how long to cache DNS records for in seconds.
Please note: When entering the host name without the domain appended on the end, ensure NOT to use the (.) following the hostname as this is not a valid DNS configuration.
How long does it take for my change to take effect
Please allow 24 to 48 hours to ensure your DNS changes have published fully across the Internet. There is no way to speed up this process as all ISP's need to refresh their servers worldwide.
How do I cancel my DNS?
If you need to delegate to different servers, you will first need to cancel the DNS management tool. On the domain management screen, you will see an option to cancel the DNS on the lower left of the screen (under the "manage DNS" link you use to make changes). This must be selected before you can change to using Non-Melbourne IT nameservers.
What type of DNS records does Melbourne IT support and what do they do?
A records are the most common type of DNS records. A records can only point to IP addresses. Most commonly A records are used for pointing your domain to your website hosting package. The most common two records are the base A record and the WWW record. For example:
example.com in A 192.168.0.1
www.example.com in A 192.168.0.1
In order for www.example.com to work we need to make sure we've created the WWW record as well as the base record.
CNAME stands for
Canonical Name, we use a CNAME when we wish to point a sub domain to a server address or a path opposed to an IP address. The simplest way to think of this is, instead of pointing our DNS record to number we are going to point it to letters instead. Here is an example of a CNAME record.
webmail.example.com in CNAME webmail.partnerconsole.net.
In this example we have pointed to the subdomain webmail.example.com to a server address webmail.partnerconsole.net . If you have a cloud hosting plan with Melbourne IT this will actually let you log into your emails via webmail.yourdomain.com instead of using webmail.partnerconsole.net . I'll note that we had to use a CNAME opposed to an A record because A records don't support characters.
MX stands for Mail Exchanger. These records are in charge for routing emails to your mail service. You set your MX records to point to a mail server address. You might have your emails hosted with Melbourne IT or you might have them hosted somewhere else. It's even possible for you to have your own mail server at your office or even host one out of your home. Either way MX records are in charge of routing the mail.
Let's say you send an email to email@example.com. What happens is your email client has a look at the domain example.com and looks at the MX record. It then knows where to route the mail to. After that it has a look at that mail server and it then finds the mailbox for james. We won't go into to much depth about how mail works, but just be aware in order for email to work you need MX records. MX records usually come in pairs and they follow a priority system. The lower the number the higher the priority.
This means the higher priorty MX records will always be referred to first, if there is a break or failure the 2nd highest priority MX record will be chosen. In more complicated setups some customers will specify different email server under extra MX records, this is usually for redundancy, this is if the primary and secondary mail servers experience issues.
Here is an example of a couple of MX records:
Priority 10: mx1.bne.server-mail.com.
Priority 50: mx2.bne.server-mail.com.

We won't go into detail about these, but if you're required to add one quite simply follow the same process as adding other DNS records, except select the correct type of record.
