TitleHow do I lock and unlock my domain name?
Description

Some types of domains offer a level of protection to prevent unauthorised changes being made – we refer to this as “locking” a domain. This means that nobody can move the domain to another registrar, change the servers or do anything to change its setup without the lock being removed. This is great when you have your domain entirely set up the way you want it and are happy to leave it “as is” until you let us know otherwise.

Before a domain name can be transferred from one registrar to another, the permission of the registrant must be obtained. This normally happens by email and is authenticated by the email address. But contact information can be old or inaccurate, leading to errors. This means that there may be situations where a transfer may be approved by an unauthorised person. As transfer communications are invariably by email, things can go wrong if the authorised person does not receive the email.

Locking your domain name adds another layer of protection and means you must unlock your domain name through your MyAccount before you give permission to transfer it to another registrar.

By locking your domain name, you can have additional peace of mind that your domain name will not be transferred to another registrar without your permission. It may also provide added protection against your domain name being hijacked - taken over by another party who may use that control to alter content on your website or re-direct your website to another site.
